Background of the study
Widows often represent a vulnerable demographic facing unique socio-economic and health challenges. In Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, healthcare accessibility for widows is compromised by factors such as limited financial resources, social isolation, and cultural stigmatization. These factors contribute to delays in seeking healthcare and reduced adherence to treatment regimens (Ifeoma, 2023). Recent studies have highlighted that widows are at a higher risk of neglect in healthcare service delivery, necessitating targeted interventions to improve their access to quality care (Chinwe, 2024). Community-based support systems and policy reforms are essential to address these disparities and ensure that widows receive comprehensive healthcare services. This study explores the multifaceted barriers to healthcare accessibility for widows, offering an analysis of current challenges and potential remedial measures.

Statement of the problem
Widows in Ohafia face significant challenges in accessing healthcare services due to economic hardship, social isolation, and cultural biases. These barriers result in delayed or forgone medical care, adversely affecting their overall health outcomes. The gap between the healthcare needs of widows and the available services is widening, highlighting a critical need for targeted interventions to improve accessibility and service delivery for this vulnerable group (Ifeoma, 2023; Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the level of healthcare accessibility for widows.

  2. To identify socio-cultural and economic barriers affecting access.

  3. To recommend policy interventions to improve healthcare delivery for widows.

Research questions:

  1. What is the current state of healthcare accessibility for widows in Ohafia?

  2. What are the main barriers to healthcare access faced by widows?

  3. How can policy reforms enhance healthcare accessibility for widows?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Economic constraints significantly hinder healthcare accessibility for widows.

  2. Cultural stigmatization adversely affects widows’ willingness to seek care.

  3. Policy interventions can improve healthcare accessibility for this demographic.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the healthcare challenges faced by widows in Ohafia, providing insights that will guide policymakers and health practitioners in formulating targeted interventions. The aim is to enhance service delivery and ensure equitable healthcare access for widows (Ifeoma, 2023; Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to analyzing healthcare accessibility for widows in Ohafia Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on local socio-cultural and economic factors.

Definitions of terms:

  • Widows: Women whose spouses have died.

  • Healthcare Accessibility: The ease with which individuals can obtain health services.

  • Cultural Stigmatization: The negative social attitudes that hinder access to services.
